For centuries, the ritual of enjoying a warm, aromatic brew has been a global constant. Yet, for too long, a truly fascinating and diverse category of beverages has been unceremoniously lumped under a single umbrella: "tea." As a brand dedicated solely to the art of infusions, we've made a deliberate choice to uncouple our craft from the world of Camellia sinensis. We believe that to truly honour the power and purity of these plants, they must stand on their own.
The history of infusions is ancient, predating the widespread popularity of tea in Europe. For millennia, cultures across the globe have harnessed the power of plants, flowers, fruits, and roots to create medicinal tonics and flavourful drinks. These were not "teas," but purposeful infusions, understood and celebrated for their distinct properties. Our ancestors knew the difference - a calming chamomile for rest, an invigorating ginger for warmth, a soothing peppermint for digestion. They were sold by apothecaries and herbalists, each celebrated for its individual attribute.
Then came the rise of commercialization. As teabags and convenience took over in the 20th century, the nuanced difference between a true tea and an infusion was lost. It became easier to market "peppermint tea" or "chamomile tea" than to educate consumers. In addition, brand owners with a passion for tea quickly caved in to pressure to supply both teas and infusions to hospitality. This semantic shortcut, while convenient, has been deeply problematic. By categorizing everything brewed in hot water as "tea," the unique qualities of infusions have been diminished. They became an afterthought, a less sophisticated alternative, often reduced to a bland collection of crushed leaves and flowers in generic "blends" designed for mass appeal and to satisfy hospitality requests. The focus shifted away from the integrity of the plant to a homogenized, often low-quality, mass-market infusion.
At our core, we believe that this approach does a disservice to the plants and to you. We reject the notion that infusions are a homogenous category. We also don't believe they should be diminished to a generic mixture masked by artificial flavourings. Each plant we work with, from the bright zest of lemon verbena to the earthy depth of wild rooibos and the floral elegance of damask rose, offers a singular sensory experience. When treated with respect, carefully sourced, minimally processed, and artfully prepared, each one tells its own story.
This is why you won't find traditional teas within our repertoire. Our mission is to shine a spotlight on the incredible diversity and potent power of the plant world, giving each infusion the respect it deserves. When Nazani Tea was established, the concept of infusions being separate was fringe thinking, hence the term tea was added to enhance visibility and accessiblity within the market. We see our work not as a rejection of tea, but as a recognition of our distinct identity. We are here to educate and bring you infusions with purity, purpose, and provenance, celebrating each one for its individual brilliance, and one day bringing about its recognition as a separate category.
We invite you to join us on this journey. Step into the world of true infusions and discover a universe of flavour and wellness, one infusion at a time.
