Our naturally grown Hibiscus brews to a vibrant red colour with sweet floral and citrus notes, that are both clean and bright but perfectly balanced with some earthiness and completely lacking in any astringency. The vibrant colour shows the cup is full of the antioxidant anthocyanin, and the citrus flavour demonstrates the presence of both citric and ascorbic acid (vitamin C). Our Hibiscus infusion is handpicked from naturally grown shrubs on the beautiful island of Paros. Buds are painstakingly collected at just the right time when they are at their best in August and before they start to fade and wither. Our hibiscus is dried in accordance with traditional and ancient methods to ensure that the infusion is preserved perfectly. Compared to standard hibiscus, our flowers are smoother and more balanced due to the varietal and the purer growing conditions and methods.

In ancient Greece, Hibiscus has been part of mythology from when the god Adonis transformed into a hibiscus flower to distract the goddesses Aphrodite and Persephone from fighting with one another and was traditionally a symbol of love and attraction, joy and happiness.
Our naturally grown hibiscus petals are truly beautiful too! It was also widely used medicinally by the Greeks, Egyptians and by many other cultures, including those as far east as China. An infusion of hibiscus is made from the red calyces of the flower, and the cultivation of this Hibiscus (H. Sabdariffa) has been traced back to western Sudan over 6,000 years ago.
The use and consumption of Hibiscus was documented in Greece most notably by the historian Herodotus (484-425 BC) and philosopher Theoprastus (372-288BC). Hibiscus sabdariffa is a species native to Africa which has many beneficial uses. The plant is an annual, perennial herb or woody-based sub-shrub, growing up to 2-2.5 m (7-8 ft). It has been recorded as having been used to treat measles and as a cooling herb, providing relief during hot weather by increasing the flow of blood to the skin and dilating blood vessels. Chinese folk medicine has recorded its use in treating liver disorders and high blood pressure. In the Mediterranean Hibiscus has more widely been recorded as used for relieving coughs, increasing urination and killing bacteria.

Our naturally grown hibiscus flowers are handpicked from around the Cycladic island of Paros during August each year. Compared to standard hibiscus, our flowers are smoother and more balanced (with a little less astringency), due to the varietal and purer growing conditions.
Whilst Paros is second in size to Naxos, and also less mountainous, the terrain relief gently slopes towards the sea which allows for it to be greener, more lush and with plenty of water, which is ideal for shrubs such as Hibiscus.
